“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” ~Colossians 3:23

“I’ve never really believed in things like this, but could that have been God?”

This was not the outcome I was expecting when I called my co-worker *John with a quick project question.

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps” ~ Proverbs 16:9

Up until this particular Thursday, it had been all business with John.

I knew his role within our team and he seemed tough as nails – that was about it.

That changed after a simple, “Good morning, how are you?”

He replied, “Oh fine, well actually it’s been rough after what we just went through with my son”.

My heart sank. This wasn’t normal.

I responded, “I’m sorry – I didn’t know. Is everything ok?”

There was a pause.

He slowly replied, “It is now. It’s a wild story. Do you have time to listen?”

My heart did a flip. God was whispering, “this is important”.

I instantly said, “Absolutely, tell me more.”

John began, “My youngest son was in a motorcycle accident two weeks ago. He always wears a helmet. But, on this evening he and his girlfriend went for a ride down a busy four-lane highway, without helmets. Stupid kid! They are not sure what happened exactly, but their motorcycle ended up in a ditch and they were both thrown far from the scene.  His girlfriend was conscience and not hurt badly. She couldn’t find him and began walking to find help. Luckily, a car stopped and called 911.

At 4:00 am, life flight arrived and flew her off for medical attention.

However, the State Patrol was still unable to find my son.

Now remember 4:00 a.m. Carrie, it’s important. Don’t forget 4:00 a.m.”

John is a program manager.  An engineer by education. His responsibility is to know all the details. Make decisions based on facts. Always remain a few steps ahead of any potential risk. And understand how everything works.

As he spoke in great detail, I waited in anticipation for the moment God’s presence was going to become clear.

He continued.

“Meanwhile at 4:00 a.m. (approximately 80 miles away) my wife and I were getting up for the day. When we noticed, the headlights on my truck were flashing.

Similarly to the way they flash when your vehicle alarm is tripped.

But this was different, rather than the two lights flashing in sync with each other – they alternated left, right; left, right. Like the lights on an emergency vehicle.

Being an engineer who had worked on vehicle alarm systems, I was fascinated why this was happening.

I even started researching for some logical reason what was causing this to happen. Eventually they turned off. And we went about our morning.

Until approximately 8:00 a.m., when we received a phone call from my frantic, confused son. He explained he was being taken to the hospital, he wasn’t sure what was happening, but he was badly hurt”.

God whispered to me – stay quiet, just keep listening.

He started to get a little lost in all the details and began focusing on how badly hurt his son was.

“Carrie, his face was an absolute mess. He has broken bones and is covered with road rash.

But he’s alive. He had no brain injury. He is not paralyzed.

I’ve been trying to find the State Patrolman who found him and learn more details.

He shouldn’t be alive.

Those lights.

The 4:00 a.m. timing.

I mean I don’t normally believe in things like this, but was that God?”

As the question hit my ears, tears rolled from my eyes.

I replied, “Yes”.

“Do you think so,” John questioned again.

“Yes”, I repeated. “That was God’s grace and protection”.

It was quiet. Then he excitedly asked, “may I share some pictures of him with you? I mean his injuries are unbelievable?”

His voice was filled with the sound of awe and gratitude.

I said, “please do”.

He was right, the outward appearance of the injuries were brutal.

He said again, “Isn’t that wild”?

Our call ended.

I sat stunned with what had just happened in the middle of a seemingly normal work-day.

I started thinking of the fact a few days prior to this conversation, I had finished reading “Imagine Heaven” by John Burke.

Burke’s study of near-death experiences and survivors’ testimonies of the transition to heaven and returning to earth are moving to say the least.

Early in the book, he writes:

“We may ask ourselves, what is our unique purpose?

We often make this complicated, because we want our purpose to give us identity, but God means it to work the other way around.

To love God is the first and greatest commandment (it’s our purpose).

To love our neighbor (those He’s placed in our lives) is the second.

God has us uniquely here for a purpose – and love is central to that purpose – no matter whatever else we accomplish.”

“Love must be sincere”. ~ Romans 12:9

God placed the word of eternity on my heart unexpectedly just weeks prior to this conversation.

He led me to ways to study and learn more about the importance of keeping your eyes focused on Jesus and eternal things.

How acts of sincere love indeed play a role in His eternal plan.

He then opened the door for His love to shine.

He had prepared me during the “in between” to serve as a small voice in His plan.

God broke through to a heart, that wasn’t looking.

And in the process, taught me learn to trust even more.

I’m thankful God nudged me to pick up the phone that day, rather than my normal quick Teams instant message.

Thankful John chose to share.

Thankful for the Lord’s preparation and the people he’s placed in life that praise Him, even when His plan doesn’t make sense at the time.

June 6, 2024 was a good, good day.

All praise be to God.

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but is the same God who does the work in all of us”. ~1 Corinthians 12:4-6

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord" ~Romans 6:23

In honor of Mother's Day. The teaching in this post was written by my Grandma Elva in 1981.

My grandma had a spirit that could light up a room.

Some of my favorite childhood memories are of times she and her siblings would gather.

It was always filled with lively conversation and laughter!

They were a unique blend of proper and rebellious.

Their love for learning, exploring and serving was infectious.

They had a youthful sparkle regardless of age.

Grandma seemed to have endless energy.

Petite in stature, with an abundance of strength.

She taught me that recipes are merely a loose suggestion.

To be respectful of my mother.

That it was important to learn the Lord's Prayer, because it teaches you how to pray.

Strength comes from the Lord.

Strength and femininity go hand in hand.

Even when you are the only woman in the room.

To this day, when I hear the words, "Thy Will Be Done" spoken at the close of a prayer, I still remember how it would make me jump, when she did so.

She took great joy in teaching about Jesus.

I'm thankful my aunt Debbie has lovingly preserved and passed a collection of Grandma's sermons and letters on to the next generation.

It’s an honor to share an excerpt from a lesson Grandma delivered during a Mother's Day banquet at the Putnum County United Methodist Church over 40-years ago.

I love how God's word is timeless.

"What Shall I Give Thee"

What are gifts?

Why are they used?

How often shall I use them?

Gifts are something we give to someone else.

They may be given for any one of a number of reasons.

Usually, we think of gifts as an expression of our love and our esteem.

Most of us are neither poets or flowery speakers, so we find it easier to express ourselves by the giving of gifts.

This is a physical exhibit of our love rather than saying it in so many words.

Mothers, I will turn my thoughts to you.

I pray that our daughters' souls will never stop growing;

that God will always be real to our children;

that He will always challenge our daughters to the new heights He has for them.

And of all the gifts we could give our daughters or grand daughters, perhaps the gift of time is of greatest importance.

Are we utilizing our time wisely?

Are we trading every single day for a day of our life with theirs?

Each phase of our lives has its own compensation to give the gift of time, as described in this poem:

"I like to walk with Grandma;

Her steps are short like mine.

She doesn't say, "Now hurry up,"

She always takes her time.

I like to walk with Grandma;

Her eyes see things mind do-

Wee pebbles bright, a funny cloud,

Half-hidden drops of dew.

Most people have to hurry;

They do not stop and see.

I'm glad that God made Grandmas

Unrushed and young like me!"

So- let's give our time.

Let us give them understanding - a willingness to listen.

Too often we are prone to consider their problems less significant.

Too often we compare them to ourselves.

Too often we have the tendency to criticize rather than give life.

Too often we betray confidence.

So- let's give them understanding.

Then - let's give them the opportunity to walk alone.

The most mature form of love in not the kind that manipulates others to become what you want them to be.

But one that frees others to become what they are meant to be.

Let's love them enough to provide them space.

It takes great courage to let them stumble and watch them pick themselves up and go on.

But how much stronger will they be, because of it?

So - let us give our children the desire to be courageous as they meet life's challenges.

Let, each of us as Mothers take this pledge -

Life is a challenge.

I will live trustingly.

"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for Thou are with me." ~ Psalm 23:4

Life is a task.

I will live it obediently.

"We keep His commandments and do these things that are pleasing in His sight!" ~ John 3:22

Life is a mission.

I will live it helpfully.

"Be ye kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another." ~ Ephesians 4:32

If then, I can instill in these children of mine these characteristics I will have fulfilled the purpose for which I was born.

For they will be able to face the world in which I have thrust them into with confidence, fearlessness and courage;

Knowing that, "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." ~ Romans 6:23

And now, may the love and peace of God the father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit rest and abide with you, both now and forever - Amen.

Grandma, you lived your purpose.

No matter how intriguing a passage, no matter how thrilling the pursuit of knowledge, it is all meaningless unless it leads us to the face of Jesus. Talk of angels and demons, mysteries and conundrums are enlightening, but knowing God is eternity-changing.” - Alton Ganaky, Uncovering God’s Mysterious Ways

"Then Jesus told him, because you have seen me you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen, yet have believed". ~ John 20:29

I love an adventure.

Work travel falls within the adventure category for me.

Charlotte, North Carolina is home to one of my favorite airports.

This "favorite" status came in handy in February 2024 when a mixture of weather and mechanical issues yielded a 24-hour layover.

Typically travel hiccups do not rattle me.

But this was an exception.

I had an unusually strong sense to return home.

This return adventure began on a Friday evening.

The thought of missing my consistent Saturday morning routine had my anxiety high and patience low.

Saturday mornings are precious to me.

It's when I recalibrate and prepare my heart for Sunday and the week.

I love this routine.

Our first delay resulted in returning home by 9:00 am Saturday.

I was good with this, despite the extremely early departure time!

When Saturday morning came though, a mechanical delay slipped my return into late afternoon.

I had a bit of a meltdown.

I went in search of a quiet place.

I found an upper level in the American terminal.

It was home to the terminal chapel, military lounge and a collection of rocking chairs.

Plus, a phenomenal view of all types of airport traffic.

I didn't catch the beauty initially.

I was fighting back tears of frustration.

I found a rocking chair, popped in my earbuds and hit Spotify.

A song I had never heard before came up first.

"Don't You Give Up On Me", by Brandon Lake.

"I see you, child

Though you can't see me

And I know your thoughts

Before you even think

I heard every last prayer you prayed

Though I answered all the time

You just didn't hear my reply

And I know it's not easy

Don't you give up on me

Don't you give up on me

Cause the darker the night gets

The brighter the light hits

Don't you give up on me

You ain't seen what I promised

Child, we're just getting started

There is so much more."

Frustrated tears transformed to tears of love.

Ok, Lord I hear you.

There was so much simple, yet complex beauty in this moment.

The Lord interrupted my immediate disappointment and allowed me to embrace the day placed in front of me.

People who needed a listener's ear. Situations that called for a smile or a thank you. Simple moments of laughter.

Amazing!

But what I see more clearly now, is the Lord's whisper was also preparing my heart for the weeks to come.

Like he does each Saturday at the zip code I call home.

Little did I know confusion and doubt were on the horizon in some areas close to my heart.

He was planting the seed to begin studying miracles, grace, compassion and peace.

Shortly after this trip, he revealed to me on a Saturday morning a book to begin reading.

"Uncovering God's Mysterious Ways", by Alton Gansky.

Again, in the moment it didn't really make sense.

In the following weeks, it required tremendous discipline to slowly read this very detailed book.

But, at just the right time, he led me to the chapters studying how many of God's ways will never be understood on this side of heaven.

On Saturday, April 20th He nudged me to Chapter 4.

Mysterious Miracles

"Miracles demand attention.

Whether one believes in them or not, they still demand attention.

Skeptics work hard to disprove the miraculous events.

Some miracles puzzle even the most ardent believer.

They are beyond not only the norm but also are odd in technique and leave us wondering not just "how" God worked, but "Why".

While answers are often elusive, investigation is ALWAYS worthwhile".

Imagine the power to hear these words repeated back the next morning in a sermon.

The topic, Miracles.

I hope this leaves you with an encouraging reminder.

The Lord will never leave you.

He will never fore sake you.

He's ahead of you, beside you, behind you.

He's got you, and those you love too.
