"Be alert. Be firm in your faith." ~ 1 Peter 5:8-9

It's said within every great relationship (or community), there is a great fall.

Peter helps teach us this.

ree

Peter was a man of faith. He was dedicated to the truth of God.

He was considered one of the most prominent apostles.

Described to have great zeal, energy and an absolute devotion to Christ.

Yet, along the way, he was also known to make rash - even harsh decisions.

Jesus knew him. He knew his weaknesses and he knew is potential. He chose him.

Peter is a great example of focus.

Peter's faith sparked him to ask Jesus for the wonder of walking on water.

Jesus allowed him to experience this miracle.

But, only for a brief moment.

Peter must have felt joy, confidence, and a rush of adrenaline.

The emotion overcame his faith.

Peter became distracted.

He lost focus on Jesus.

Peter sank.

ree

Peter is also known for denying Jesus three times.

Including the denial at Jesus' last Passover.

A denial that caused Peter to feel great shame and likely confusion.

But, after the resurrection, Jesus comforted Peter.

He gently corrected his path.

He provided clear instructions.

I tend to think when the conversation ended, Jesus laughed and said, "now let's do this thing!"

Peter listened. He grew into a man of humility.

The fact he was in a role of prominence didn't matter to him.

He learned to admit when he was wrong and make a commitment to change.

Jesus loved him through all the reality.

The denial, the rashness, the learning.

He could see Peter's heart.

Alertness (vs. unawareness) is a characteristic of Jesus.

The ability to be aware of the physical and spiritual events taking place around you so that you can have the right response.

An awareness of what you can, and can't, physically see.

It's a partnership of reality and hope.

It's easy to relate to Peter.

It's easy to love how Jesus loved him through it all.

I was led to study Peter in March 2024.

I've reflected how my emotions can be blinding at times.

Blinding to the needs of others.

Blinding to Jesus.

To forgive when no apology is spoken.

And to give thanks when prayers are answered beyond my wildest expectations.

So again, it's said within every great relationship (or community) a great fall occurs.

You betray or you feel betrayed.

You hurt or do the hurting.

In this, focus turns to people's faults and away from Jesus.

There is the desire to run, to give up.

But Jesus shows us with Peter, it's worth sticking it out.

As you do, you will see people's character grow.

Through the Lord's grace and guidance, you will see them become a new creation right in front of your eyes.

And they will see you become a new creation right in front of their very eyes, too.

A little bit day by day.

"An iron sharpens an iron, so one person sharpens another" ~ Proverbs 27:17.

God loves us so much, He also places people in our lives to help us learn, refine, and grow.

Even people, who help protect us.

Brothers.

2 Samual 23 tells the story of David’s three “mighty men”.

In the story, David shared with his warrior friends how he deeply missed the water of his youth.

The three men took action, risking their lives and placing themselves in enemy lines – to seek this water and refresh David.

Romans 12:10 reminds us, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above ourselves”.

Devotion is deeper than affection, affinity, or fun.

Devotion is a choice, that comes from a humble, warrior like spirit.

David’s friends were devoted to him and his true purpose.

They loved David with a love rooted in a commitment to the Lord. A love bigger than themselves.

The McKenna sisters. Friends who are family. Even when you live miles apart.

Mark 2 tells us how Jesus healed a paralyzed man because of his friends’ faith.

Friends who were willing to plea and petition to the Lord – on his behalf.

To petition means to passionately, in a well-reasoned manner – plea your case to the Lord.

Reasoned from a place of God’s word.

Sometimes we are the petitioner for others.

Sometimes others petition on our behalf.

Sometimes we receive the beauty of someone’s spirit filled radiance.

And sometimes we are the giver.

All the details of how these countless instances fit together is a mystery on this side of heaven.

Yet, there is a pattern.

There are times the pressures of life make us wonder if God is against us.

John Calvin referred to these times as, “life under the cross”.

If we are going to become more like Christ, then our lives must follow his pattern:

Relationship with the Father.

See.

Listen.

Learn.

Go do what we see and hear.

Walk in truth and love.

My “baby” is now almost 15 years old. I joke, he’s long been a 40-year old man in a boy’s body.

Recently, friends and family have commented his voice is changing, deepening.

Despite the fact he’s one of my favorite people to talk to – I hadn’t noticed.

My ears had grown familiar and dull to this change.

It hit me one day. Momma – he’s a young man!

I need to shift my heart in the way I love, nurture, and guide him.

My goodness – how the Lord is loving and growing him is amazing!

What if I had missed the prompting from the Lord to shift how I pray and play my role as a parent?

Who would have been impacted if I had only gone through the motions of daily routine - head down, eyes closed?

What if my eyes, ears, and heart had missed the beauty in his growth?

Luckily, I have an always visible reminder how to love.

2 Timothy 1:7, written on my wrist. Because Jesus loves in simple, yet mysterious ways. (see "Radiant Warriors".)

He needs us to see and embrace the gifts he’s placed in and around us so much – that he will interrupt us in a way he knows we will listen.

The sound of his words will breakthrough in the most personal ways.

The gentlest of whispers.

Tears of correction.

Laughter that lingers for days.

A rhythm of devotion.

The roar of heartbreak.

Smiles of reconciliation.

Quiet that clears the way.

So that, we can love him.

And our neighbors, family, friends, and those who have hurt us – the very same way.

Continue the pattern. Contribute to the legacy. Holding tight to our identity.

I love how Jesus loves.

How it looks. How it sounds.

Only He can unlock true change.

Only He can change hearts.

“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us strength, love and self-discipline”.

~2 Timothy 1:7

This verse which encourages us to stand-firm in our faith with boldness and humility, has been inked on my wrist since August 2019.

Truth be told, in 2019, I didn’t know why I was creating a permanent reminder on my wrist.

I simply knew it was important and needed to be written someplace safe, I could never forget.

Even if needles make me pass out! (quite certain the tattoo artist thought I was too soft to have ink).

Today, it serves as a daily reminder of the way Jesus loves.

The way we can choose to love as well if we are willing to humble ourselves through Him.

It’s in honor of a very special person.

A person whose words in an everyday type of conversation sparked me to go searching for something I couldn’t describe.

But know now, it was a search for a deeper relationship with Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:7 was the first step.

It wasn’t what my friend said, or our topic of conversation – it was the sound of his voice.

I’m confident this person had no idea the Lord was working through them that day.

What a beautiful, powerful example of pure humility.

A permanent reminder. August 2019.

Humility and boldness seem like opposing forces.

Yet, Christ teaches us how the two can live in harmony.

This harmony is powerful. Life changing.

The true definition of humility is to agree with the Word of God and model his instruction in our attitudes and actions.

It’s clear from the Gospels that the pattern of Jesus’ life was first and foremost – an intimate relationship with the Father. He would observe what the Father was doing, listen to what he was saying and then Jesus would do and say exactly what he saw and heard. A repeated pattern that was handed down to the Apostles.

The book of Acts is packed with bold humility by the apostles – even when the mysteries of God’s plan had to leave them asking, “why”.

Moses, David, Mary, Daniel –are all great examples of bold humility.

Moses is particularly intriguing.

Despite Moses’ humility, when God sent him to Pharoh to deliver His message – Moses was as bold as a lion and refused to back down.

Exodus 34 describes the “Radiant Face of Moses” – as Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments it was described as, “he was not aware his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord” – (Exodus 34:29-35)

When we believe what God says about us – when we find our identity in the way he calls us – a godly humility will shine through.

A radiance that is pure because it is rooted in a belief of God’s promises.

Many of us are blessed to know at least one person, with this glow.

A radiance deeper than “happiness”.

A sense of knowing regardless of the circumstances.

A glow that welcomes new believers to be curious and learn more.

Awakens the tired.

A gift they give, simply being themselves.

Who are they in your life?

We can nurture the spirit of humility by choosing to close our eyes to comparison.

We are empowered to enter each day as a new day – placing past failures and success behind us.

Cheers to today.
